RPAC supports the creation, production and dissemination of contemporary art, its collections, artists, creators and public and private promoters in Portugal. It promotes social, cultural and artistic responsibility objectives, to bring citizens closer to art, to develop teams and professionalize spaces, to promote multidisciplinary, multiculturalism, accessibility and internationalization.

It is made up of institutions of different types, dispersed across the country, dedicated to promoting and stimulating contemporary Portuguese art, in the fields of visual arts and interdisciplinary areas, whose standards of quality and precision in carrying out their cultural and artistic activities are recognized by the Ministry of Culture.

In 2021, the Portuguese Contemporary Art Network emerged from the desire to prioritize a sustained cultural policy that promotes decentralization and territorial deconcentrating, and wider access to the arts, expressed in the Programme of the XXII Constitutional Government.
