Samson Kambalu
Samson Kambalu
Following the opening of his exhibition in the Culturgest galleries, Samson Kambalu (Malawi, 1975) will talk to us about his film production in relation to the wearing of masks in the rituals of the Nyau brotherhood, a secret society from Malawi, where the practice of “the gift” is a central question. Looking at the eclecticism of this African country’s culture, which Kambalu extends to philosophical and artistic movements of European origin, such as Dadaism, Surrealism and Situationism, we will compare the paths followed by the projectionists of travelling cinema in colonial times with the stories of emancipatory policies, mentioning some radical figures from the world of pan-Africanism, such as John Chilembwe (Malawi) and Clement Kadalie (South Africa).
