Following the Palace of Awe exhibition, inaugurated in Tavira last May, House of Awe again contrasts works from the Coleção da Caixa Geral de Depósitos with brand new pieces by guest artists and artefacts embodying the material culture of the host region – Trás-os-Montes. Confronting the Coleção da CGD with objects from other universes and other ages, this second exhibition is less concerned with the educational and informative function of art, focusing more on its symbolic, liturgical, or even gregarious aspects.

This second incursion into the territory of awe and its constellations includes a set of new pieces by Renato Ferrão (Vila Nova de Famalicão, 1975), in which the interaction of light with small sculptural devices offers us spectral, ghost-like images, uncertain in their staticness, dubious in their content. These are joined by artefacts from a region abounding in legends and fables, whose pagan rituals have bequeathed a unique legacy. By bringing all these objects together, we hope to see dialogues and contrasts appear, giving rise to a productive and challenging tension that facilitates the spectator's immersion in the intense and disconcerting space of a House of Awe.
