Encyclopédie de la Parole / Joris Lacoste, Pierre-Yves Macé, Sébastien Roux, Ictus
French artist Joris Lacoste spent fifteen years amassing a wealth of recordings of the human voice, collecting over a thousand audio documents that include parts of speeches, commercials, personal messages, readings, audio instructions, and so forth, in over twenty languages. These audio materials were the basis for Suites, a series of shows hugely successful in festivals and venues around the world.
For the final instalment in the series Lacoste chose to present a set of audio examples unmediated by actors. The original speakers themselves return from the past to engage with their own voices – their earlier melody, their unique timbre, their distinctive breathing. Offering a thousand details itemised in the original recordings, these audio documents – heard along with the music of Sébastien Roux and Pierre-Yves Macé played live by Ictus Ensemble – create an orchestra of voices that imparts on us the sheer variety and endless riches of human communication.
Languages include English, Italian, German, French, Hebrew, Thai, Spanish, Japanese, Malayalam, Swedish, Dutch, Arab, Portuguese, Napolitan, Russian, Gaulish, Scotch, Korean, Susu, Shanghainese, Catalan, the Sicilian dialect, Greek, and Tomáraho.
