Fernando Marques Penteado
Fernando Marques Penteado
Curated by: Bruno Marchand
In his practice as a visual artist, Fernando Marques Penteado often operates as a sort of screenwriter. His works present themselves as constellations of materials from the most diverse origins, created, intervened, or merely appropriated by him, referring to entities, events, and fictional, or biographical narratives. Composed of objects collected from the street or found in second-hand warehouses, of all kinds of randomly compiled images, but also of original drawings, paintings, or sculptures. Marques Penteado's works resemble expanded, three-dimensional scripts, where each element contributes to the unveiling of a kaleidoscopic narrative that depends on and embraces the subjectivity of the viewer. Penteado’s predilection for textile work, and in particular for embroidery and other traditional crafts, places his work in a particularly appropriate place for dismantling the codes and norms that shape many of our convictions regarding issues of gender, intimacy, homoeroticism, and violence.
