The 17th edition of FEST – New Directors | New Films Festival welcomes the Catalan film director Isabel Coixet, one of the greatest exponents of contemporary cinema in Spain, with an extensive retrospective of her work in the festival’s Be Kind Rewind section. A History graduate with past experience in Advertising, Isabel Coixet soon became a unique figure in the world of Spanish filmmaking, avoiding many of the stereotypes and traditional discourses of the local cinema. Unequivocally Catalonian, the director is a pioneer in the struggle for gender equality in the film industry, having been a leading reference in her own country, where she paved the way for the appearance of a group of new women filmmakers, while also acting as one of the founders and the Honorary President of the EWA – European Women’s Audiovisual Network. Isabel Coixet’s cinema frequently deals with many of the most important existentialist conflicts of our present times, making her a rare case of international success.
