Solstício de Inverno

In 2011 when a tsunami levelled the Japanese city of Ōtsuchi, causing the death of a large part of its population, those who survived turned to Itaru Sasaki’s garden. It was there that in a grieving process, Sasaki had set up a telephone booth disconnected from the network which he used to deceive his longing, imagining that on the other end of the line was the person he loved and disappeared. Since then, the place has served as a stage for the mourning of thousands of people who come from all over the world to talk to those who are no longer there. They called it the Wind Telephone, and it serves as the starting point of this performance in which attempts are made to face of what we don't know with empathy and creativity, starting from helplessness, pain and imagination, in search of some consolation. Winter Solstice is about the desire to overcome the shadow, one night at a time.

Teatro da Cidade was founded in 2015 by Bernardo Souto, Guilherme Gomes, João Reixa, Nídia Roque, and Rita Cabaço. His first show, Os Justos (The Righteous) by Albert Camus, premiered in 2016, at Teatro do Bairro Alto, with the support of Teatro da Cornucópia. It focuses on the importance of text for creating shows, using the world’s theatre repertoire.
