Joana Gama & Luís Fernandes
Joana Gama & Luís Fernandes
At the end of a ten-year cycle, a broad and aggregating view of the works of Joana Gama and Luís Fernandes strengthens the understanding of their unique place in the Portuguese musical context — and beyond. It is worth going back to the different recording steps that marked this first decade: Quest, Harmonies, At the still point of the turning world, Textures & Lines, and There’s No Knowing, one album after another profusely illuminated by the desire to do something new and different. In between, other composition missions for cinema, performing arts, or television, proving the elasticity of a formation that has a natural attraction to artistic challenges. Then, in a time of an inevitable look-back, Joana and Luís symbolically return to the initial moment of their collaboration, working with filmmaker Eduardo Brito, who created the cover image for Quest and the duo’s first photographs, and Frederico Rompante, creator of all the light designs of their concerts. Inhabiting this space of dialogue between light and images, we will listen to Strata, the new piece by Joana Gama and Luís Fernandes for the piano, electronics, and multiple layers of sounds collected from different parts of the globe.
