LAFF — Lisbon Arab Film Festival
LAFF — Lisbon Arab Film Festival
The historical ties between Portugal and the Arab world are deep, however the reality, complexity, and richness of the contemporary Arab world still has much to reveal. In an era where cultural understanding and diversity are more crucial than ever, the first edition of the Lisbon Arab Film Festival (LAFF) takes place.
A showcase of the most recent and outstanding films from the Arab world and the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa), LAFF aims to contribute to dialogue between cultures, offering a vision of today’s Arab societies, cultures, and realities, far from the stereotypes of media coverage.
A selection of ten films from the Arab world will be presented, selected by the region’s main international festivals. The event also features meetings with film professionals and side events featuring Arabic cuisine.

Algeria, 1994. Terrorist attacks have ravaged the north of the country for the past two years. S. and Lotfi, two childhood friends, cross the desert in search of Abou Leila, a dangerous terrorist. The pursuit seems absurd since the Sahara has not yet been affected by the wave of attacks. But S., whose mental health is faltering, is convinced that he will find Abou Leila there. Lotfi, on the other hand, has only one idea: to keep S. away from the capital. However, by sinking into the desert, they will face their own violence.

Thirty years later, her daughter Lina, a filmmaker, returns with her to the village and questions for the first time her mother’s bold choices, her chosen exile, and how the women in her family impacted their lives. A true weaving of present-day images and family and historical archives, Bye Bye Tiberias is a journey through four generations of daring Palestinian women who preserve their intimate and collective memory through the strength of their bonds, despite exile, dispossession, and heartbreak.
