This session complements the audiovisual essay Aventuras no Império: uma história mal contada, which combines sounds and images from dozens of American and European films and television episodes produced up to 1975, fictionalising the then Portuguese colony of Macau. The session includes a lecture-performance by historian Rui Lopes on the context that shaped this wave of productions and their imaginaries, from the Cold War to the tensions and contradictions generated by the semi-peripheral status of Portuguese colonialism. 

It will be followed by a conversation with Luís Mendonça, programmer at the Cinemateca Portuguesa, so as to rethink this work from the perspective of audiovisual language and film history. One of the editors of this audiovisual essay, Rui Ribeiro, will also be present.
