Telemann and Bach were fully familiar with each other's work. At the time, Telemann enjoyed greater prestige, but, since his death, Bach has overshadowed him. Now they are frequently heard side by side, proving that they cannot be judged by the same criteria. Here, the harpsichord in Bach'sBrandenburg Concerto no. 5 and Triple Concerto BWV 1044 underlines his instrumental skills. Telemann's Les nations suite enters into the domain of symbolic representation, and we imagine an institutional ceremony picturesquely evoking various countries, including Portugal, to the sound of... castanets?
