MÃO MORTA
MÃO MORTA
In 2024, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 25th April revolution and the 40th of Mão Morta. These numbers relate to one another, because without the Carnations Revolution, the band from Braga as we know it would never have existed. Without the space of freedom, their voice could not have existed, nor could they have released many of their albums, or been an agitator in our culture. But despite half a century of democracy, it is urgent to keep the pulse on reality, and monitor speeches and movements that suggest regressions. It is in the midst of this danger that Mão Morta wants to return to being sentinels of freedom, creating their new work based on some of the greatest references from the past protest movement: Zeca Afonso, Zé Mário Branco, Adriano Correia de Oliveira, or Ary dos Santos, reveal themselves in a male choir as a symbol of the anthem Grândola, Vila Morena. In the celebration of Mão Morta’s 40th anniversary, their social and political concerns continue to be the same and their music will once again be born from the pressing need to seek new paths, challenges, and even obstacles, until the ultimate consequences. With each new work, we find a new chapter of their freedom, and of ours.
