La nuit des idées
La nuit des idées
La nuit des idées happens in tandem with trans philosopher Paul. B. Preciado’s performance Eu Sou o Monstro Que Vos Fala, presented at Culturgest during BoCA – Biennial of Contemporary Arts. With a question – “plus?” – for motto, A Noite das Ideias starts with a debate on gender. The word plus followed by a question mark invites us to reflect on accumulation, excess, and proliferation as a general rule for our world. In short, we live in a hypertelic regime, where goods, information, cultural and social phenomena, and myriad other aspects of contemporary life go beyond their designated purpose. The concept of hypertely is the guideline for A Noite das Ideias – and our starting point for discussing the plus sign at the end of LGBTQI+ as a reminder that the acronym remains unfinished, and can at any time be added to.

The discussion at this roundtable revolves around the “+” sign (as it is an eloquent translation of the “Plus?” that thematically presides throughout this entire edition of La Nuite Des Idées) that appears at the end of the LGBTQI+ acronym, which has been subject to progressive expansion. This expansive force of gender, leading it towards unnamed territories, makes it a constant power capable of disturbing boundaries, showing itself overtly, and thereby causing scandal.

Since its early days, experimental cinema, a-cinema, has turned the filmic space into an exhibition space itself, in the enigmatic mode of slowness and duration, creating a unique cinematic path that lies between documentary and fiction. The screening of the short films: The Working Life (Superflex, 2013), Déjà vu (Hallu) (Michel François, 2003), Provisory Object 02, and A is hotter than B (Edith Dekyndt, 2000 and 2005) explores slowness, bodily rhythms, and the gestures of unproductive work, while also advocating for leisure.
The conversation, The Great Escalation of Acceleration and Speed, which follows, focuses on the ever-increasing speed. The law of acceleration only foresees its opposite, deceleration, in the form of a colossal disaster. However, by acknowledging the irreversibility of acceleration as the ultimate catastrophe, deceleration becomes a salvational hypothesis. Therefore, it is relevant to discuss speed as a hyperthelic phenomenon, not forgetting the Accelerationist Manifesto (England, 2013).
