PEDRO MELO ALVES’ OMNIAE LARGE ENSEMBLE
PEDRO MELO ALVES’ OMNIAE LARGE ENSEMBLE
Originally a septet, the first challenge faced by Pedro Melo Alves’ Omniae Ensemble culminated in their winning the 2016 Bernardo Sassetti award for musical composition and their presence in the lists of the best jazz records of that year. Well-deserved awards that have helped to map the importance of this still young percussionist who has now become a composer. And, however much their ambition has remained clearly visible in the results of this (and other) groups, we would not have been expecting that a few years later this septet would grow in direct proportion to the greatest aspiration of Pedro Melo Alves: in 2020, during a busy interval between lockdowns, the Omniae Large Ensemble came into being at the Guimarães Jazz Festival, presenting us with one of the most powerful, explosive and original orchestras of free music that we have ever known. Conducted by Pedro Carneiro, the group takes the form of a large and balanced cosmos, leading us to glimpse not only a future of music, but, above all, the brilliant future of the music of Pedro Melo Alves.
