Quantum World: Strangely Familiar
Quantum World: Strangely Familiar
Curated by: Liliana Coutinho
It was a hundred years ago, in 1925, that scientists Erwin Schrödinger, Max Born, Werner Heisenberg, and Pascual Jordan laid the foundations for quantum physics. This knowledge, with its counter intuitive and exotic theses, is transforming our lives, although it is still poorly understood. And we are not alone in this difficulty: Richard Feynman (1918–1988), Nobel laureate in Physics, stated that if someone says they understand quantum mechanics, it is because, in fact, they do not understand it.
Still, we don’t give up on entering this universe and we dedicate it to the three conference sin this cycle. We invited physicist and philosopher Patricia Kauark Leite to introduce the principles that transform understanding, researcher and professor at Instituto Superior Técnico Yasser Omar to talk about how technologies based on quantum principles are already transforming the areas of computing, communication, and health; and finally, physicist, Portuguese philosopher, Jesuit priest Bruno Nobre, who addresses the relationship between quantum physics and spirituality, reflecting on how quantum concepts intertwine with questions of consciousness.
