Robespierre’s epitaph says: “Passerby, do not grieve my death because were I to live you would be dead.” Robespierre and the passerby can’t both be alive at the same time, but in the theatre that’s what happens: the playwright dies and the living actor brings him back to life. Let’s take someone reading a text aloud, in public, script in hand: we find ourselves confronted simultaneously with their presence and non-presence. What we seek to highlight with this show is the non-presence, the phantasmagoria, the other event, which is not the one that actors usually establish as the here and now. We will put the dead on the stage, but even more so. We are not calling the dead back to life, we’re calling ourselves over to the other side.
